Concerning rise in colorectal cancer in younger adults
A very concerning article was published on Medscape, an online resource I reference often as a physician. The article highlighted the increasing rates of colorectal cancer in younger adults. This is very worrisome. The key takeaways from the article:
Early-onset colorectal cancer (CRC) mortality ↑ rapidly in US adults <45 years.
Rectal cancer mortality ↑ 2-3x faster than colon cancer.
Ages 35-44 show the most pronounced mortality increase.
Symptom-triggered workup may be needed before routine screening age 45.
In my book Optimized I mention colon cancer multiple times, in terms of the absolute importance of fiber in the diet and avoidance of toxins that may be contributing to increased rates of colorectal cancer. Healthy diet, healthy body weight, regular exercise, and minimizing alcohol consumption are the keys to preventing colorectal cancer and helping reverse this disturbing trend!
